This blog entry is very special to me for two reasons, this was our first holiday together and after a long day at Welches Beach we decided to start this blog. Curious?

VEGAN IN BARBADOS

– B A R B A D O S –

In march 2014 (yes, it took me that long to do a blog post about it…) Thomi, the amazing boyfriend and I spent four lovely weeks in Barbados, situated in the Lesser Antilles and the Amercias. With Bridgetown being its capital the island covers 432 km2 and is out of the hurricane belt. The name Barbados derives from the Portuguese word Barbados, meaning „the bearded ones“. Please do yourself a favor and rent an apartment, a car and shop in local stores. Traveling is about culture, adventure and exploration. Barbados is a safe country which has lots to offer once you step out of your comfort zone. Check out my illustration of our holiday to get into the right mood, do you feel them island vibes yet?

ACCOMODATION

We spent the entire month at Kim’s Place, which we rented via Airbnb. Kim, a marine biologist is such a sweetheart and her apartment is very cozy. Big bonus: it comes with a Jeep! Read more.

VEGANISM
We basically lived off coconut water & ITAL food. Our absolutely favorite spot is an insider tip: Papa Earl. He sells his delicious home cooked vegan ital meals out of his car in Holetown. Right next to him you can buy as much fresh coconut water as you want. Read more.

On Sundays the Holders Hill Farmers Market is a must. Look out for Sonja and her amazing vegan brownies, muffins or lentil burgers or go for her organic veggies and leafy greens. Read more.

And last but definitely not least Vegan Cottage, outside Bridgetown. Delicious meals in a lovely environment. Augustine is very welcoming. Read more.

Always a good stop: Oistins by night, besides fish, they serve some vegan food options like potatoes & salad. Nothing special but pretty good after a long day at the beach. Also music and cocktails!

Also: there are many other vegan restaurants. Try out some local fruits and vegetables. We have come to absolutely love okras and dislike yams.

BEACHES
Sandy Lane Bay & Paynes Bay: our daily afternoon go-to beaches. Parking available at the other side of the street. Make sure to:

1. rent a little kayak (ask the guys at the beach) and paddle out to swim with turtles
2. have a mind blowing Rum Punch at the beach bar (and when I say mind blowing, I mean it.)
3. look out for @badgalriri who happens to show up every now and then at her luxurious apartment at the Sandy Lane Resort.

FACT: We saw Jay Z on his phone and Blue Ivy with her grandmother or nanny at the beach. No, I am not kidding. Beyonce didn’t join them on their boat trip, or maybe she was already waiting for her loved ones on her yacht?! Who knows? Only Beyonce Know(le)s.

Batts Rock Bay & Paradise Beach: breathtaking beach, with very little visitors. There might be some tiny jellyfish, but don’t worry, bathing is still possible. For all the adventurer who love to photograph abandoned buildings, check out the huge empty four seasons hotel which has never been finished due to corruption.

Folkestone Marine Reserve: great place to snorkle. Lots of fish which live in the coral reef.

Charlisle Bay: quite touristy, take good care of your valuables. Big plus: great snorkeling, lots of sunken ships!!

Accra & Hastings Beach: very nice boardwalk.

Welches Beach: free parking, no people, and lots of waves

Foul Bay: great place to take pictures and enjoy each others company. No crowds of tourists, just some locals.

Bottom Bay: some other tourists but yet very comfy. Also check out Palmetto Bay and Cave Bay.

Bathsheba: breathtaking location! The atlantic current is quite strong so no swimming. Take a walk along the wild rugged coastline and experience a whole new side of Barbados.

🏛
ARCHITECTURE
Codrington College: pretty amazing location & architecture, starts with a dense avenue of palm trees and ends with an exquisite view through the arched passage on the atlantic ocean.

East Point Lighthouse: the only lighthouse worth visiting of all four. Amazing viewpoint and some hiking trails.

Bulkeley Sugar Factory: why not?!

Mount Gay Distillery: first take a cab, second make sure to bring home some rum. You will end up getting pretty drunk on many different rum types and find out a whole lot about rum production. Besides making delicious rum, the CI & tour are very nicely designed. One of the view tourist locations we highly recommend, our favorite? Mount Gay Black Barrel.

Bridgetown: not my favorite place to be honest. Too hot, too crowded. Two stops I highly recommend if you are in town anyway: the abandoned „The Empire Cinema“ and the Caribbean Cigar Co.

Also: the island is full of abandoned places waiting for you to discover them. Be brave, be adventures!

🚀
OTHER LEISURE ACTIVITIES

Animal Flower Cave: in the very north of the island you will find this glorious cave and unique viewpoints and hiking trails.

Welchman Hall Gully & Harrison’s Cave: the last piece of nature. Take a walk, watch monkeys, enjoy life.

Pico Teneriffe: an absolute insider tip, an intriguing landmark on the north-east coast. Quiet difficult to find, check study the map before hand and ask locals. Very worth visiting. It is going to be just you & some cows.

Morgan Lewis Mill & Cherry Tree Hill: cool mill and heavenly viewpoint on the entire eastern side of Barbados. Very nice, very down to earth.

Enjoy ♡
