Yes, this actually happened. We love buying those big watermelons at the turkish shop next door. They cost 0,80€ a kilo. Great deal. So last week we came across this 20 kilo / 40 pounds heavy baby, joking about who could eat it faster, and so the idea was born. Thomi and me love being competitive and wanted to see who could do it better and faster. What do you think who won? I just love watermelon. I wouldn’t mind living on a deserted island, my only food source being watermelon. I love the colors, I love the smell, I love the taste, I love the mess. The first bite is my favorite, and the second is too. Deep pink, with dark green stripes.

The watermelon is thought to have originated in southern Africa, where it is found growing wild, it has even been mentioned in the Bible, eaten by ancient Isrealites while they were in bondage in Egypt. This is how long this juicy deliciousness has been around. It was introduced to Europe in the 11th century, spreading northwards. This tropical / subtropical plants need temperatures higher than 25°C to thrive, so I guess I am not gonna home grow any of them in Graz at any time soon. The rinds are also edible, which I wasn’t aware of. Actually my dogs knew, should have asked them, they love snacking on watermelon rinds. What other reasons are there to eat more watermelons? Besides caring them home and strengthening your arm muscles.

To really maximize your lycopene intake, let your watermelon fully ripen. Lycopene is a powerful carotenoid antioxidant that gives fruit and vegetables a pink or red color, it has potential anti-cancer activity, and is very effective at protecting cells from damage and may help lower the risk of heart disease. Watermelon juice may relieve muscle soreness and on a hot day it is a tasty way to help you stay hydrated. Also the fruit’s concentrations of citrulline and arginine can improve blood flow and may help reduce accumulation of excess fat. Vitamin A  and C help your skin and hair moisturize and it encourages healthy growth of new collagen and elastin cells.

I was very sure to win this thing, and so was he. Turns out we eat the same amount of food in the same amount of time. 7 hours 19 minutes and 55 seconds. We felt detoxed, and a little exhausted afterwards. The next day was amazing. High water content fruits are a blessing. Your body will feel very flexible, light and healthy. I can’t wait for the next challenge. My boyfriend is the best.
